Welcome to Mrs. K's Lifelong Fitness!

Modified Physical Education

Successful completion of physical education is required for graduation.  More importantly, students who do well in physical education classes learn important skills and develop positive attitudes about life-long fitness and healthy lifestyles.

The primary objective of physical education is to provide structured physical activities including team sports, lifetime sports, and fitness activities that can be incorporated into students’ lifetime physical fitness program.  The only way students can benefit from physical education is to actively participate in classes.  In Modified Physical Education much of the class will be designed around the students specific needs.

Preparation:
To earn points for preparation and to qualify for participation in class, students must:

ü  Be an active participant in the day’s activities.

Participation:
ü  Follow all class procedures.
ü  Work to the best of your ability to complete class tasks.
ü  Demonstrate respect for yourself, other students, the teacher, and school property by maintaining appropriate behavior and language.
ü  Pass written and skill assignments with the greatest level of competency.
Participation Points:
ü  For every class meeting, students will receive full points if they meet the expectations outlined above.  Points will be lost when students deviate from the class procedures, do not actively participate to their fullest potential, use inappropriate language, treat others disrespectfully, or fail written or skills tests.
Grading:
ü  Students receive letter grades based on the standard grading scale. To determine a student’s grade, the teacher divides the points earned by the number of points the student could have earned.
Absences:
ü  Physical education is a lab course, meaning that students must be physically active to learn what is expected of them and to earn their points for the day.  It is impossible to duplicate the classroom experience without actually making up the physical activity.

ü  Medical excuses are the only acceptable reason for non-participation.  They are accepted only from a doctor through the school nurse.  If students participate fully, according to the limitations set forth by their doctor, they may still earn full points for preparation and participation.
ü  In cases where no physical activity is allowed, medically excused students will make up the classes at a time agreed to by the teacher.
Any student who is registered as having asthma or an allergy to bee stings needs to bring the appropriate medication with them to class, and have a doctor's note on file with the nurse's office. Students should have their inhalers or epi pens on them during class in the case of an emergency. If a student is not prepared with proper medication, he or she cannot participate for health and safety reasons. A phone call home will follow to keep you updated if a student consistently does not have their medication. Failure to participate in physical education class due to lack of proper medication may lead to the student being provided with an alternative assignment. You may bring in a note from your parent indicating that the nurse has an inhaler in the office and you do not need to bring the medication to Physical Education Class.
